Palestinian People's Party prepares for elections amid uncertainties

Palestinian People’s Party intensifies preparations for elections

The Palestinian People’s Party (PPP) has intensified preparations for the Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for 28 November, seeking to build a broad alliance of left-wing, democratic and social forces that could offer an alternative to the political polarisation between Fatah and Hamas.

The party held a new round of discussions with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and the Palestinian Democratic Union (FIDA). PPP General Secretary Bassam al-Salhi has presented the initiative as an effort to establish a common political, economic and social programme for a joint electoral list.

The party’s electoral agenda includes changing the Palestinian Authority’s economic and social priorities, strengthening public services and workers’ rights, and supporting a more self-reliant economy. Al-Salhi has also argued that elections should contribute to rebuilding the Palestinian political system, ending institutional division between the West Bank and Gaza, and establishing a government accountable to an elected parliament.

Uncertainty over the elections

On 8 October, reports emerged that Palestinian factions had discussed postponing the elections during talks in Cairo. Islamic Jihad said an understanding had been reached to delay the vote, while Fatah indicated that the timing remained subject to further dialogue and national consensus. The reports did not establish that a final postponement decision had been formally adopted. This uncertainty presents a significant complication for parties preparing electoral lists.
