Communist Party of Mexico holds Fourth Workers' and Trade Union Conference

The purpose of the Conference was to systematize the extensive experience accumulated by the front that forms the backbone of the communists' political activity. Emphasizing that this accumulation took place during the period of social-democratic governance that began with the administration of former President López Obrador in 2018 and continues under President Claudia Sheinbaum. 

This period is defined by the restructuring of the labour market with the approval of the reform to the Federal Labour Law in 2019 and the inclusion of the labour chapter of the USMCA, also signed that year, which legalized US government intervention in labour disputes and allocated a significant budget for training union leaders. And, changes in the labour movement so that both the central labour federations and, in general, the unions continue to function as a mechanism for controlling the working class by the governments of the Fourth Transformation, which PCM has characterized as anti-worker and anti-popular.

The conference was agreed upon at an expanded meeting of the Workers' Union Section in November, where numerous communist cadres actively involved in the workers' and union front, from both the Communist Party of Mexico (PCM) and the Communist Youth Front (FJC).

The Fourth Conference was attended by communist and union cadres from various states across the country, who work and are organized in the industrial, energy, communications, education, and platform worker sectors, as well as the university academic sector, and labour lawyers; it also included a representative from the Political Bureau.

Reports were presented by the Regional Committees on the experiences, progress, and difficulties they have faced in carrying out their party activities among workers and unions. Documents were also presented and discussed on the following topics: On the PCM's work with workers and unions, Union development in the industrial working sector, On the organization of teleworkers (to which a section on telecommunications workers was added), The work of teachers and communists, as well as the work being done by physiotherapists in the Yucatán Peninsula, and the efforts undertaken with private sector education workers, in order to understand, systematize, and learn from these experiences.

Among the recommendations that the Conference agreed to forward to the Central Committee, the importance of continuing to promote the Workers' Turn with greater determination was emphasized, in order to increase the class-based composition of the party itself, as well as to increase the party's influence among the working class and teachers. To encourage the creation of cells in workplaces to continue raising class consciousness and strengthening workers' struggles.

The use of the party's tools and media, as well as intervention in class-conscious mass movements, and the implementation of workshops and bibliographic materials, were among the other recommendations the conference made to the Central Committee.
